MEGAN'S LAW MUM BACKS OUR CAMPAIGN

Dennis Rice

The battling mum who gave Megan's Law to America yesterday backed the Sunday Mirror's campaign for a similar law here.

It would compel the authorities to notify parents if a convicted paedophile moved into their neighbourhood.

Maureen Kanka's seven-year-old daughter Megan was raped and strangled by a convicted child molester who had moved into a house across the road from their home in New Jersey.

Following intense lobbying by Maureen, 42 American states have adopted Megan's Law.

Maureen, 37, said: "It is vital for the future of every child in your country that parents gets behind the Sunday Mirror campaign.

"I know that some laws have been passed in Britain but they have not gone far enough.

"We are talking about people who have sex with children - children who are either scarred for life or murdered as my Megan was.

"Either they lock these people up or they tell us when they are around our children.

"We put signs up for animals such as 'Deer crossing' but nothing to protect our children," said Maureen, who has two other children.

Thousands of Sunday Mirror readers wrote in last week, backing our campaign for a Megan's Law here.

The Government last month introduced a new Sex Offenders Act that has provision for a register of paedophiles. But it is terribly flawed.

Around 50,000 known sex offenders do NOT appear on it because their crimes were committed before the Act was passed.

Our petition insists that parents MUST be told when a convicted sex offender moves into their area. Please sign the form below for the sake of all children. We will make sure every one gets to the new Home Secretary.

To the Home Secretary

YES, I support the Sunday Mirror's campaign for a new law in Britain...to ensure that parents MUST be told when a convicted child sex offender moves into their neighbourhood. We need action NOW.
