Bonington's lap-top is really HIGH tech
David HancockWhen Britain's top mountaineer, Sir Chris Bonington, goes out for a stroll he always takes an apple with him.
And he'll also be doing that when he attempts to scale the "secret mountain" of Sepu Kangri in Tibet later this year.
This time it's a pounds 4,000 Apple PowerBook 340, the fastest lap- top computer in the world. It's the main component of a hi-tech system that will allow Sir Chris's seven-man team to relay every step of their way to the 6,950-metre summit back to the world instantly via the Internet.
"I've always been fascinated by technology," says the 63- year- old climber, who has conquered some of the world's biggest peaks. "This expedition will be really high-tech. We also have an Olympus Camedia digital camera, which we will use to download pictures into the PowerBook.
"The reports and pictures of the day's progress will be dispatched using a data terminal beamed to a satellite over the Indian Ocean."
They will hit earth in Norway and be automatically e-mailed to Sir Chris's son Rupert at his home in Cumbria, and he will update the expedition's World Wide Web site.
When Sir Chris and his team make it to the top they plan to celebrate...with a game of Warcraft 2 on the PowerBook.
"It's my favourite strategy war game," says Sir Chris.
