Keep track of MACs - Product Information

Sean Kelly

Kern County (Calif.) is using Crimp Enterprise Server 5.0 from Cablesoft to improve the tracking of moves, adds, and changes (MACs) for data and phone jacks. The county's department of human services will use the software to monitor about 4,000 jacks in 22 buildings. Crimp 5.0 will give the exact status on network infrastructure, highlighting where additional cabling is needed--or where cabling that is no longer in use needs to be moved.

Before the product was installed, there was no formal system to keep track of changes. "The information and communications services department deals with hundreds of inquiries each week, mostly regarding questions for locating phone and data jacks," says Kevin Morovich, office automation analyst for the human services department. "The Web interface in Crimp 5.0 will dramatically cut the time spent on these types of calls."

For example, Kern County can now locate the individual jacks and devices that form the foundation of the network for the 800 employees in the human services' main building. This cuts troubleshooting time, leading to greater staff productivity. "In addition to the on-line capability, we chose Crimp 5.0 because it had all the essential elements for infrastructure management," Morovich says, "such as importing CAD drawings, reports on connections, and inventory of devices."
