Directors OK Amicus brief

Chicago Meeting Notes

At each Association national meeting at least one hour of education programming is devoted exclusively to the concerns of Attorney-CPAs. Attorney Richard Frederick spoke to the Association's directors during the Dual Rights Education Program in Chicago. Mr. Frederick, the attorney involved in U.S. v Frederick, summarized the decision of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals which found that tax return preparation is outside the practice of law. The directors affirmed the Executive Committee's decision that the Association support Mr. Frederick's petition for certiorari before the Supreme Court with an amicus brief. L. Harold Levinson, Professor Emeritus, Vanderbilt School of Law will serve as lead counsel. (See page 6 for the full text of the Association's amicus brief.)

Fall Meeting Timing Discussed

The directors held an extensive debate on the question of whether or not to shift the time of the MidYear Meeting from November to January. The decision on the date and location for the Mid-Year Meetings for 2002 and 2003 was postponed until the Virginia Annual Meeting. A straw poll conducted through the attorney-- cpalist was inconclusive. Members will be polled as to their preference before the July meeting.

The directors resolved that the location of July 2002 meeting would be Jackson Hole, Wyoming rather than Denver, Colorado. Director Shirley Derke, Nevada, will chair the meeting.
