Rally for recess
Most kids agree that recess is their favorite part of the school day. What could be more fun than swings, jungle gyms, games of tag and hopscotch, or just hanging out with your friends on a sunny day? But did you know that recess is GOOD FOR YOU? Don't panic; it's still fun!
Fifty years ago, most American kids got three recess periods a day. Today, because many people believe that children need more time in the classroom, almost half of all American schools have no recess. Some schools don't even have playgrounds!
The United Nations agrees that playtime is important for children all over the world. It wrote a special document called the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which supports children's right to play. And, believe it or not, the International Association for the Child's Right to Play was organized to let people know about the value of play for children.
