LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Gitt, Rolf MRe: Editor's Note, Vol. 11, Issue 4, which discusses testing Linux solutions in public sector IT shops. There are several strong drivers of IT infrastructure within the Ontario public service, and one of those is a reduction in technology footprint. As a whole the OPS is trying to standardize on a few platforms. Urging all public sector organizations to test out Linux would have huge costs for us in terms of IT staff training, the time and effort to create Linux-based test labs, the diversification of system monitoring tools (rather than a reduction in these tools), and myriad other issues. Although everyone likes to pick on Microsoft, some reportedly independent TCO studies indicate that Linux-based solutions are not cheaper than Microsoft-based solutions in the long term. I think the Linux tools need to mature a lot more before government entities should spend taxpayer dollars on reviewing these options. Government should look at Linux options again in five years, but not right now.
