THE Teletubbies invaded American TV screens today in a blaze of publicity and controversy, in New York.

News programmes, major magazines and newspapers stressed the objections to the series that had already been raised in Britain and warned Americans of the bizarre adult "cult" following it has inspired. Translations of Teletubby phrases appeared in newspapers to help Americans understand the surreal speech of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po.

The show's American distributor Ken Visel-man compared the hysteria to the arrival of the Beatles in the US in 1964, adding: "I've never seen anyone deconstruct children's television in this way."
