MPs unlikely to fight for News at Ten
Mark NicolTONY BLAIR'S support for News at Ten was today expected to be undermined by members of the House of Commons media committee, who claim the Prime Minister is "biased" towards ITN, writes Mark Nicol.
Although committee chairman Gerald Kaufman is also a News at Ten fan, it is anticipated that ITV chiefs will not face opposition at Westminster if they decide to ditch the flagship bulletin.
The chief executive of ITV, Richard Eyre, and the chairman, Leslie Hill, will be told that - despite the Prime Minister's much- publicised stance the fate of News at Ten is regarded as a matter for the Independent Television Commission. Before the hearing, one committee member said: "Times move on. There is now a widely held view that as there are a lot more channels providing news, ITV should be free to compete. It is not up to MPs, or Parliament, to be programme controllers."
