BBC pins its hopes on Kate and chat

Mark Nicol

MICHAEL PARKINSON and Kate Winslet share the limelight in the BBC's GBP 125 million winter TV season launched today.

The self-acclaimed "best bloody interviewer in the world", who regularly attracted 12 million viewers to his Parkinson programme from 1971 to 1982, returns for a new series in January.

As a curtain raiser, Parkinson's interview with George Michael - the singer's first since his Hollywood arrest in April - will be broadcast on BBC1 this Sunday. Winslet stars as Sue Bridehead in Jude, the BBC's dramatisation of the Thomas Hardy novel Jude The Obscure. Jude is played by Christopher Eccleston. The drama was made before Winslet filmed the hit movie Titanic. The BBC winter season includes 70 hours of drama which leans towards the contemporary with shows such as Holby City, a spin off from Casualty, and a television version of Bravo Two Zero, former SAS man Andy McNab's account of a raid behind enemy lines in the Gulf War. Heartbeat star Nick Berry returns as a south coast harbourmaster in Harbour Lights.
