THE COTTON CLUB COMES TO THE RITZ: UK ARENA: 9.30pm. London's Ritz Hotel was transported back to the days of Prohibition and glamorous gangsters Pick of the Night when it played host to a unique performance by the black stars who made the Harlem club the height of fashion in the Thirties. This magical film relays that special night, intercut with footage and anecdotes from the heady history of the club, offering hipper viewers the chance to appreciate jungle rhythms long before techno-disco claimed them. Original stars like Cab Calloway, Adelaide Hall, Chuck Green and the Nicholas Brothers demonstrate that, despite the odd grey hair and extra pound, the years had not dimmed their extraordinary ability as entertainers. Try to resist the urge to soft-shoe shuffle round the TV set.
