The dawn of Donner's new lodge. . - Travel Guide Tips and Tricks - hotel review
Ben Davidson* The turn-of-the-century icehouse is long gone, as is the tumbledown inn that replaced it on the shore of Serene Lakes in Tahoe's Donner Summit country In their place is the Ice Lakes Lodge, which opened in the fall of 2000 with 26 elegantly decorated rooms, a huge granite fireplace, a cozy cherry wood bar, and a dining room that looks out on snowy Dulzura and Serena Lakes.
The new lodge is less than 5 miles from Sugar Bowl's downhill slopes and only 1 mile from Royal Gorge cross-country skiing. Also nearby are Soda Springs Winter Resort, Donner Ski Ranch, and Boreal Mountain Resort--each offering superb beginner and intermediate ski terrain.
From I-80, take Norden/Soda Springs exit west of Donner Summit. Turn right on Soda Springs Rd., head south 2 miles to the lodge. From $145. 1111 Soda Springs Rd., Soda Springs; (530) 426-7660 or www.icelakeslodge.com.
