CHELSEA Harbour Design Centre, the interior design powerhouse of Europe, holds its main event, Focus '98, among its 60 showrooms offering the best in British and international design for a week beginning 25 September, with a public day on 26 September.

Among a multitude of themes is the reinvention of checks and stripes. They have always been popular but this year they move out of the kitchen and bedroom.

Masculine cloths such as rugged tweeds, refined Prince of Wales checks, houndstooth, windowpane checks, and chequerboard are all making an impact and are being used as the main catalyst for major schemes.

Large chenille check in millennium blue and white makes a wonderful centrepiece on a sofa from which to build a scheme around; or why not add extra interest to a dining room by mixing a variety of black and white chenille checks around the table - a contemporary twist to an opulent setting and certainly a talking point.

The Regency stripe is the forerunner of all stripes and has traditionally been used on dining chairs. Today, stripes come in a wonderful range of colours from muted shades to carnival colours to please any mood.

Wide velvet stripes are particularly popular at the moment and look excellent on both traditional and contemporary upholstery.

Voile is the new net. For years it was used for privacy, and was rampant in the suburbs, but we've come a long way from the days of readymade nets.

Voiles have grown up, as Christian Lee of Zimmer + Rohde says, "both visually and technically." A wonderful selection is now available, ranging from the natural to the manmade.

For a luxurious look, fold organza silk voile over reeded antique- style poles above your windows or drape it over a bed like mosquito nets. In contrast to the general idea of floating, billowy voiles in tones of whites and creams, there are a number of metallic voiles which let diffused light filter through but add a touch of drama to any room.
