Sprint selects Optical Solutions to enhance FTTx equipment and deployment offerings

Sprint announced that it has enhanced its fiber-to-the-premise/business (FTTx) portfolio with the addition of transmission equipment from Optical Solutions Inc. Sprint North Supply will offer network service providers the full FiberPath 500 system, including the FiberDrive Optical Line Terminal (OLT) central office and the FiberPoint Optical Network Terminal (ONT) subscriber units.

"By rounding out the base of our FTTx portfolio with a pure fiber solution, we now have all the pieces in place to meet our clients' high level of interest in FTTx," said Brad Clark, vice president of marketing and general manager of OEM operations at Sprint. "With Optical Solutions' equipment, we will be able offer the full FTTP package to service providers that want to deploy fiber all the way to the home or business."

The FiberPath 500 system converges "triple play" voice, video, and high-speed data services on a single all-fiber network that extends all the way to a subscriber's home or business. The system's passive optical network (PON) technology conveniently eliminates the need for active electronics in the field, resulting in a lower-maintenance network that taps into the higher-bandwidth capacity of fiber.

"A complete FTTx system offers many benefits to service providers," said Brian Brown, senior vice president of sales and service at Optical Solutions Inc. "Not only is it easier and more cost-effective to maintain, but its expansive bandwidth capacity supports multiple services and applications, including video on demand, Web TV, security, video conferencing, virtual private networking and more."
