Initially heralded by Ether-LECs and then the RBOCs, the metro optical market is becoming a hot area of interest for cable MSOs. And Sorrento Networks, which is currently on its own comeback trail, is targeting this opportunity full force with an initial product offering that will focus on VOD (video on demand) transport for its GigaMux metro/regional DWDM system.
According to the vendor, the new 10-port module will enable MSOs to gain a 25 percent greater port density than competing eight-port products. Going forward, Sorrento will incorporate other features such as integrated switching and drop-and-continue capabilities for digital video broadcast applications. Taking up only two slots in its 17-slot GigaMux, platform, this new product combines 10 GigE ports into an aggregate 10 Gbps wavelength for transport of digital video and other GigE services. Customers can deploy GigE transport in one, two or 10 full-rate GigE streams per wavelength. In addition, the product supports fractional rate GigE to combine multiple smaller signals into a full rate stream, when necessary. The product is available.
