Guiding you through the World Wide Web
John DuncanBUSINESS and the Internet move ever closer. The World Wide Web has become a comprehensive and vital source of information, a vehicle for commerce, a simple and cheap way to buy and sell shares, a widely used paperless communications tool and often just a source of simple amusement.
Reflecting much of this, today we launch the Business Day.net column - a straightforward guide to websites relevant to much of what is happening or is about to happen in the City and the business world.
A welcome change from the Punch and Whitbread show comes with finals on Tuesday from brewer Scottish & Newcastle. www.scottish- newcastle.com provides a comprehensive picture of the group from Courage to Center Parcs and Chef & Brewer to Rat & Parrot, the latter making competitor Slug & Lettuce sound positively appetising. Also on Tuesday, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders announces new car registrations for June. Figures are due at 11am and details should appear on the net at www.smmt.co.uk shortly after. Hopefully, they will sort out the little local difficulty they still have with last month's releases at the same time. Tomorrow is an exceptionally quiet day for results, but looking at Monday's crop, I have managed to resist the lure of interims from Dobbies Garden Centres to go for full-year figures from an old favourite, British Bloodstock Agency. Apart from a slight stumble in 1995, profits have grown nicely but, numbers apart, their website at www.bba.co.uk makes an interesting read. It reveals that pedigree research is just one of the Agency's services and, of course, a computer dating service for brood mares. If you want to be one of the first to know what is in the Sunday newspapers, visit www.pigeon.co.uk which is up and running with summaries of the morning's financial stories at 6.45am. P Do you know of a website that is topical, informative, amusing or just downright awful? Then reveal all by email to jdbiznetjd@hotmail.com
