Chirac urges French 'Yes' to EU charter
PETER ALLENPRESIDENT Jacques Chirac has gone on primetime television to ask the French to back the EU constitution as polls show rising opposition to it.
Mr Chirac said if France rejected the charter in the 29 May referendum, Europe's development as a unified power would be halted. All 25 EU nations must approve the constitution for it to take effect.
The president urged his compatriots to help build a "Europe that has the power to count in this world of tomorrow" during a twohour televised debate with 83 selected young French people.
Supporters of the charter have been rocked by opinion polls putting the "No" camp ahead.
Four nations have voted "Yes".
