FRINGE THEATRE Soft Boy The Stand Comedy Club Until August 16 HHHH
Doug JohnstoneFOCUSING on the torture of adolescence, John Binnie's latest play makes for an intelligent, endearing and funny hour's entertainment. The plot revolves around the lives of seven youths aged between 14 and 21 whose stories soon become intertwined.
This production from the successful West Lothian Youth Theatre deals with the everyday cruelties and confusion of growing up without sinking into condescension. This is due in part to Binnie's excellent use of language, which captures teenagers' quick-fire banter precisely.
The central character, Softie, played wonderfully by Nicol Hay, suffers depression and is torturing himself over his weight and his failure to form a relationship with old school pal Marybeth. Meanwhile Liam and Tricia have split up, Softie's brother is desperate to be a man and sisters Cara and Lara are unsettled as newcomers to the area.
The claustrophobia and insular nature of this smalltown Scottish community is palpable. Sparks fly when the characters meet up, and the aftermath has each facing up to their fears.
With excellent performances and innovative direction from Mary Gapinski, the end result is an energetic, delightful and highly captivating piece of theatre.
