Tories turned into 'victims'
Dr TONY SEWELL Leading race relations commentatorTHE Commission for Racial Equality has created a new set of victims in Britain - the Tories who refuse to sign its anti-racism document.
The stand taken by Shadow Chancellor Michael Portillo not to sign the CRE code of conduct, where MPs pledge not to use race in their campaigns, has worked in his favour.
Instead of looking like a bunch of bigots, the Tories now look like victims of the excess of political correctness. I don't want any Tory or Labour MP forced to sign something they don't believe in. That would be the height of hypocrisy.
But the CRE didn't need to play nanny to the parties. In the end, it has given William Hague fresh hope as he glories in being a victim of a new version of the mad politics of race.
