LOVERS ATTACK: KILLER QUIZZED
SARAH GRAHAMPOLICE were yesterday questioning a convicted murderer over a knife attack on two sweethearts.
Ian Haywood had previously been named by police as the man they were seeking in connection with the incident at a Sussex beauty spot.
Haywood, 36, from Hurstpierpoint, East Sussex, was convicted of murder in Winchester in 1984. He walked into a police station with his solicitor and gave himself up early yesterday.
He had not been seen since the two teenagers were ambushed last Thursday night. They were sitting in a car at Ditchling Common, West Sussex, when a man started shouting at them, then slashed at the girl's face and upper body with a knife.
The 17-year-old was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. Her boyfriend, 19, was treated for shock.
Superintendent John Dransfieldappealed for witnesses to the attack.
He said: "At this stage it's not clear what the motive was."
