Pick of the Week
CAROLINE ELLIOTTGames
Formula One 99
THIS is a straight copy of the version released for the PlayStation in October and as such does not fully utilise the PC's capabilities. That said, it's still a very good racing game, even without the bells and whistles.
You get to pretend you're Michael Schumacher or Damon Hill and race on the faithfully reproduced tracks of Melbourne and Monaco, among other places. The Quick Race option allows you to rev up your driving skills - a good idea, even if you think you're already world champion material.
Here you can go hell-for-leather without any pit stops or penalties to slow you down.
Grand Prix mode, however, is a tad more difficult.
Race length, fuel usage, skill level, car set-ups, weather conditions (including a Realistic setting which allows the weather to automatically change during a weekend race) are just a few of the options you must configure before you start. And once you get going, don't for one moment think you can cheat - you'll be racing under the same rules as the real Grand Prix drivers.
Pull a fast one and you will be disqualified.
