Shawnee North Community Park at 300 N.E. 43rd features a 15,555 square foot community center, nature trail, soccer field, four- diamond ball complex, swimming pool with 109-foot water slide, playground, sand volleyball courts, shelter house and tennis courts.

Programs are held year-round for everyone from preschoolers through senior adults. Room and open sided shelter house rentals are available for family gatherings, parties, meetings and special events.

Susan Fowler-Hentzler is the center director. Chad Lady, Mitch Gross and Darlene Streeter are recreation programmers, and Barbara Rumble and Todd Wallingford are recreation directors. They are available at (785) 286-0676.

At Rossville and Silver Lake, the recreation programmer is Jennifer Wegener. She may be reached at (785) 584-6730, or through the Rossville Community Center at P.O. Box 337, Rossville, KS 66533.

The fall programs that start during October at Shawnee North, Rossville and Silver Lake are as follows (unless otherwise noted, the programs at Rossville and Silver Lake are at the community centers in those towns):

October

4 --- Pitch for seniors. Coffee and cards for 10-point pitch included in the fee. Hours: 1-4 p.m. Fridays through Oct. 25. Fee: $2.

5 --- Needle Tatting for adults. Hours: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26. Fee: $20, includes supplies.

7 --- Wheel Throwing, exclusively for adults. Students will have access to a wheel the entire period. Class limited to five. Twenty- five pounds of clay is included in the fee. Additional bags may be bought. The instructor is Joyce Pardee. Hours: 6-8 p.m. Mondays through Oct. 28. Fee: $52.

8 --- Wheel Throwing, exclusively for adults. Same features apply as with the Oct. 7 class. Hours: 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 29. Fee $52.

9 --- Basket Making for all skill levels, a 4x8 market basket with woven bow and wood handle. Bring apron, old towel, small flathead screw driver, old scissors or garden shears, small bucket or tub, and hinged clothes pins. Joyce Resnick is the instructor. Hours: 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fee $30.

9 --- Oil Painting-Afternoon for adults at any skill level. Supply list or starter kit available from the SNCC office, 286-0676. Mary Lou Gudenkauf is the instructor. Hours: 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 30. Fee: $28.

9 --- Oil Painting-Evening for adults at any skill level. Supply list or starter kit available from the SNCC office, 286-0676. Marty Mavrovich is the instructor. Hours: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 30. Fee: $28.

10 --- Watercolor 101 for adults. Learn the basics, including wet on wet technique, mixing colors, drawing, paper stretching, color application, and more. Class limited to eight. Supply list available at the SNCC office, or call 286-0676. June Krieger is the instructor. Hours: 1-3 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 31. Fee: $28.

12 --- Jewelry Making for adults. Create a crystal glass set of necklace and earrings. A special charm will be available. Information will be given about where to buy materials and patterns for future projects. Class limited to 10. Bring sack lunch. Registration deadline Oct. 2. Hours: 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fee: $15.

14 --- Flag Football after school program at Rochester Elementary for grades three to six. Learn positions, do drills to improve skills, and play a game. Hours: 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Mondays through Nov. 4. Fee: $20.

15 --- Jack-O-Lanterns for preschoolers. Children will hear a story reading about Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin, have a pumpkin treat and take home a pumpkin he/she has painted. Time: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Fee: $8.

15 --- Baseball Card Collectors Club for youths. Bring collections for appraisal, trading or just joining the fun. Refreshments provided. Hours: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Fee: $5.

15 --- Basketball Clinic after school program at Indian Creek Elementary. Learn basics of passing dribbling and shooting, and basketball history. Hours: 4:05 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, through Nov. 5. Fee: $20.

15 --- Drawing after school program for grades three to six at North Fairview Elementary. Hours: 4:05 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 5. Fee: $20.

16 --- After School Bowling League for Lyman Elementary at Westridge Lanes. Students will be picked up and dropped off at school. Fee includes shoes, lanes and transportation. Space is limited, so register early. Hours: 4:05 to 6:15 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 6. Fee: $25.

17 --- Flag Football Clinic after school program at Pleasant hill Elementary for grades three to six. Learn positions, do drills to improve skills, and play a game. Hours: 4:05 to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Nov. 14. No class Oct. 31. Fee: $20.

17 --- Drawing after school program for grades three to six at Elmont Elementary. Hours: 4:05 to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Nov. 14. Fee: $20.

18 --- Cheerleading Clinic for youths. Learn cheerleading routines and basic skills, such as arm positions, jumps, cheers, chants and dance in preparation for school competition. Bring a sack lunch. Hours: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fee: $10.

21 --- Work That Body for adults. Aerobic workout at low, medium and high intensity levels. Steps available and optional. Free baby- sitting available during class. Mary Lou Gudenkauf is the instructor. Hours: 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Dec. 13. Fee: $47.

22 --- Stretch and Tone for adults. Improve flexibility and target zone. Marcy Burns is the instructor. Hours: 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Dec. 12. Fee: $33.

22 --- Step Aerobics & Toning for adults. Low-impact and cardiovascular workout for all levels of fitness. Easy steps to follow. Marcy Burns is the instructor. Hours: 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Dec. 12. Fee: $33.

23 --- Disco Night at North for all ages. Go back to the disco era. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in disco attire. Prizes will be given. Refreshments will be provided. Hours: 8:30 to 10 p.m. Fee: $5.

24 --- Preschool Dance. Basic rhythm and movement skills will be emphasized to develop body control, strength, flexibility and overall coordination. Lena Jenks is the instructor. Hours: 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 12. Fee: $24.

24 --- Preschool Dance Advanced. Lena Jenkins, instructor. Hours: 7:15 to 8 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 12. Fee $24.

24 --- Dancers Delight for ages 6-10. A blend of tap, jazz and ballet for introduction to the art of dancing. Hours: 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 12. Fee: $24.

29 --- Haunted Homes Tour trip for seniors to Atchison, rumored to be the most haunted town in Kansas. Ride the Haunted Homes Trolley and learn the stories behind the haunted houses. Leave SNCC at 5 p.m. or the Expocentre at 5:30 p.m. by vans, and return about 9 p.m. Fee: $10.

30 --- Halloween Spooktacular for preschoolers. Activities will include pumpkin carving, bobbing for apples, a Halloween costume contest, and more. Candy donations are welcome, beginning Oct. 14. Wrapped candy only is requested. Hours: 6-8 p.m. Fee: No fee.

Rossville/Silver Lake

5 --- Creative Memories Workshop for adults at Silver Lake. Preserve photos and memorabilia. Learn to organize, preserve and display photos in a photo-safe album. Handouts and a gift to participants. Bring 10 to 12 photos that have a common theme. Everything else will be provided. Breakfast and lunch served for Saturday class. Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $20.

7 --- Little Athletes for preschoolers. Introduction to four sports: basketball, soccer, T-ball and tumbling. Hours: 5:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Oct. 28. Fee: $20.

12 --- Baby-sitting Clinic at Silver Lake for ages 11 to 15. Learn responsibility, first aid, accident prevention, supervision, professionalism and more for American Red Cross certification. Registration deadline is Oct. 9. Bring a sack lunch. Hours: 9 am. To 4:30 p.m. Fee: $30.

18 --- School's Out Specials, a Circus Magic trip to Kansas City to see the new exhibit at Union Station., tour the interactive Science City, and the circus exhibit. A pizza lunch will be provided. Leave Rossville at 8:30 a.m. and return about 5 p.m. Fee: $30.

25 --- School's Out Specials, a Wacky Banana trip for play in huge inflatable play structures, interactive games and swimming. Bring swim suit and towel. A pizza lunch will be provided. Space is limited to register early. Leave Rossville at 8 a.m. and return about 5 p.m. Fee: $30.

28 --- Youth Craft Mania at Silver Lake Grade School for ages 6- 12. Register in advance so supplies can be bought. Hours: 3-4 p.m. Fee: $6.

29 --- Youth Craft Mania at Rossville for ages 6-12. Make a trick- or-treat craft. Register in advance so supplies can be bought. Hours 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fee: $6.

30 --- Spooktacular for children up to age 12 at Rossville. Book for apples, paint pumpkins, pin the tail on the donkey and other seasonal games. Wear a costume and try to win a prize. Enjoy treats. Hours: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fee: $2.

30 --- Holiday Crafts for preschoolers at Rossville. Features creative play, story time, songs and an art project on a trick-or- treat theme. Register in advance so supplies can be bought. Hours: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fee: $6.
