The Box Car Children
Alana McCoy Gonzaga PrepThe Box Car Children took its name from a children's book series about four kids who live in a box car.
The band's four members include drummer Sam Stoner, 17, of Gonzaga Prep, rhythm guitar player Nick Ascolese, 18, also of Gonzaga Prep, lead singer and guitarist Nick Martin, 18, of Riverside High School, and bass player Andy Bartholomew, 16, also of Riverside High School.
The band formed two years and has played at a few parties, as well as at the Mercury Cafe. They also were featured last year on 105.7 "The Peak."
The members of Box Car Children find being in a band rewarding. "It's just fun to get our name out there and play for our fans," Stoner said.
But the group has had its problems, including financial struggles due to equipment and recording expenses.
"Working through all the turmoil has made us close friends," Martin said.
The band has improved immensely, Martin added, and members are very proud of their second album, Chwelve. The group's first release was self-titled.
Two members - Martin and Ascolese - will be leaving for college in the fall, making it difficult for the group to stay together. Martin plans to drive up from the University of Idaho twice a month to practice. Ascolese, who plans to attend Santa Clara, will get a replacement until he returns.
