New York's new center - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center - Brief Article
Chris CarboneHundreds of New Yorkers on July 12 celebrated the reopening of the city's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center--marking the completion of a two-year $12 million renovation. The restoration included an expansion of the lobby and meeting rooms, the addition of a hydraulic elevator, new bathrooms, installation of central air conditioning, construction of an elliptical staircase capped by a skylight, and the creation of handicapped access.
"We wanted to keep as much of the old as possible," said architect Francoise Bollack, "but add the new in a way that is visible and spiritual."
Groups that went on to national prominence--including ACT UP, Queer Nation, and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation--were born at the center, which serves more than 5,000 people a week and is home to more than 300 organizations.
