You'll sink, not swim, with the Derby favorite - Know It All - Brief Article
Peter BrownAlong with attending my fifth Kentucky Derby, I plan to see Jack's Jet this weekend. I am part owner of the 3-year-old colt rehabbing an injury at the Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Centre. Basically, it's a spa for horses. He goes swimming every day--I should be so lucky--and it's on my nickel.
After that bill is paid, any change I have left in my pocket will be spent at Churchill Downs, where I am sad to note that at recent Runs for the Roses two things were missing: Jack's Jet and my luck. The last three Derbys, I have not fared well. It has been a long drought.
For what it's worth, I like Peace Rules this year. One thing I do know going into the fastest 2 minutes in sports is never pick the favorite. The favorite always loses, and the same goes for Empire Maker. It's just that the public falls in love with one horse, and it's almost like that horse gets scared.
Then there's the horse everybody is talking about the week of the race, like Steven Got Even (in 1999), whom everybody fell in love with not months, but three days, before the race. Never bet that horse. Never, never.
The Peter Brown Show with Scott Wetzel is live from Churchill Downs on Thursday and Friday on Sporting News Radio. Tune in or listen online at radio.sportingnews.com.
