A HORRIFIED mum found a two-inch nail in a carton of powdered baby milk as she prepared to feed her three-month-old son.

Clare Burrell bought three pounds 5.99 packs of Cow & Gate 2 Plus Infant Milk to feed hungry Bradley after she couldn't produce enough milk herself. But as she scooped up the powder to make his bottle, out came the nail.

Last night the 29-year-old mum-of-two said: "I couldn't believe it. I was just about to make Bradley's bottle when I put the spoon into the milk powder and scooped up this nail."

She added: "There was no danger of Bradley swallowing the nail. But I was worried it could have contaminated the powder because he was sick when I fed him the day before."

Clare said she rang Cow & Gate immediately and "they couldn't apologise enough". She also contacted her local environmental health department in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, who are now carrying out an investigation.

Cow & Gate said it was "a very unusual complaint". A spokeswoman added: "Our cartons are fitted with a plastic lid with a tamper- proof clip and beneath that is a foil seal to protect the milk powder." A fine sieve is meant to catch any lumps before the powder is poured into the cartons, she said.
