Juventas fly home Charles
IAN CAMERONSOCCER legend John Charles was flown home in a state-of-the-art ambulance jet yesterday with his old Italian club Juventus picking up the bill.
The 72-year-old footballer had part of his right foot amputated as a result of blood and liver complications following a heart op.
Turin club Juventus paid pounds 12,000 for the air ambulance to ensure their former star player arrived home comfortably.
Swansea-born Charles, capped 38 times for his country, collapsed six weeks ago in a Milan TV studio.
The 1958 World Cup campaign hero has been transferred to a specialist vascular unit at the Dewsbury and District Hospital near his home in Bradford, West Yorks.
Friend David Williams said: "He will be glad to be home but will never forget how he has been treated in Italy. He was given the best possible medical care and Juventus have proved there is no end to their generosity."
