The Baxter
Karen WilsonTHE BAXTER (IFC) Directed by Michael Showalter
Writer-director Showalter seems to identify with the guy in the romantic comedy who doesn't get the girl, dubbing this poor schlub the "Baxter." While the movie begins with the quintessential Baxter moment--being left at the altar--it really sets out to show how the hero, Elliot Sherman (Showalter), uses his Baxter-ness to win over dictionary-reading tamp Cecil (Michelle Williams). The premise is thin and probably better suited for a sketch on Showalter's Comedy Central show Stella, but supporting players Michael Ian Black, Peter Dinklage, Paul Rudd, and the fair borough of Brooklyn itself all turn in winning performances.
