Yemen; A Travel Survival Kit. - book reviews
William R. SmithThis book should entice many adventures travelers into considering Yemen as a possible destination.
At the time of writing, Yemen was undergoing unification, previously having been divided into Western-oriented North Yemen (Yemen Arab Republic) and Marxist South Yemen (People's Democratic Republic of Yemen).
The new Republic of Yemen faces many decisions in regulating life in the country and travelers must expect difficulties as the process occurs.
Hamalainen concentrates on the north, probably because it has been a tourist destination longer. Everything a traveler might need to know is presented.
The honest, forthright style is a pleasure to read. Details of the country's fascinating history, unique architecture, various Islamic sects and all aspects of its culture are given.
The Arabic language is discussed at length, as are possible health problems and precautions to avoid them.
Hotels are rated by a unique nosheet to two-sheets scale, stars being irrelevant.
Suggestions for shopping include jewelry, the local knives known as jambiyas, water pipes and music cassettes.
The color photos in this book are excellent.
I was glad to see the emphasis on the hospitality of the people, which for me was as great an attraction as the magnificent scenery.
This is certainly the most up-to-date guidebook available on Yemen and the surprising detail should satisfy the most demanding traveler.
