Conspiracy theory
Claire BrownWhen we heard about San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom's decision to take this truly inopportune moment to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, a few days after The Washington Times reported that millions of evangelical Christians were going to stay away from the 2004 elections because Bush had not done enough to destroy gay rights, my husband was immediately suspicions of Newsom's motives. Your article "Gavin's Gay Gamble" [March 30] reaffirmed his suspicions, and he called into question the close election in San Francisco. Did Newsom suddenly decide to be a passionate advocate for gay marriage because of meeting George W. Bush? Or was some backroom deal cut between Newsom and fire GOP to sabotage the election by bringing the issue of gay marriage to the forefront, guaranteeing that evangelicals would come to the polls? Given that even you suspect Newsom's motives, I would suggest the latter. He has almost guaranteed the GOP the election. Perhaps they offered him the vice presidency under Schwarzenegger.
