Tear down that wall

In his My Perspective essay "The Beauty of Coming Out" [April 26], Dave Koz talks about his "wall of fear." He says, "I got on the other side, and when I looked back at where this wall had been I saw that it had been an illusion--a total figment of my imagination." As someone who was gay-bashed in 1990, I'd like Mr. Koz to know that it was not a "total figment of his imagination." There was plenty to be afraid of. There's less for him to be afraid of now because brave men and women before him told the truth and fought exhausting, financially draining battles in the courts, in the legislature, and in the media to make it that way.

I join his many fans in applauding his brave decision to come out. I hope he will take the time to acknowledge the losses suffered and enormous gains won by those who chose to fight while he was still hiding behind that wall.
