Short shrift
Mark DavisRuby Red * Christine Havrilla * Boxrilla Music
Newcomers will find a lot to like about Christine Havrilla's Ruby Red, the Pennsylvania-based singer-songwriter's fifth CD. The music moves along at a steady, mid-tempo pace, with acoustic and electric guitars combining for a light country-rock sound. Havrilla's rich alto calls to mind a more melodious, less twangy Lucinda Williams.
As a songwriter, Havrilla sticks to the contemplative and confessional. "Sing" offers a nice bounce, inviting listeners to join in the chorus, while "Your Fall" is a beautiful declaration of love, tenderly delivered. "Undone" is intimately arranged, with guitars, drum, and tambourine.
Ultimately, Ruby Red feels unfinished. Six new songs--one of which is reprised--and a reprise of a song from Havrilla's 2002 release aren't enough. But if you find Ruby Red appealing, by all means check out this talented musician's back catalog.
