Outside the birdcage
Angie J. HanEvery summer a Shakespearean love story unfolds at Boston's Public Garden as crowds gather to watch the city's famous pair of swans, named Romeo and Juliet, court each other by touching their bills together to create a heart shape. Now it turns out the beloved animals are actually a same-sex couple.
Garden officials were delighted when the swans mated, but when their eggs failed to hatch they had the animals tested and discovered they were both female.
In the only state with legal same-sex marriage, the newly outed couple has been warmly received, said Mary Nines, a spokeswoman for the city's parks department. "I think for the most part people don't care at all," Hines said. "They are what they are."
