Lost Brit hiker in rape hell
STEPHEN BEVANA BRITISH woman lost while hiking in a South African mountain was attacked and raped by a local man who had offered to show her the way.
He hit her with a rock, overpowered her, then fled in the Drakensberg Mountains near Johannesburg.
The holidaymaker, in her thirties, was walking in the Giant's Castle Game Reserve but got lost on her way back in a mist on Thursday.
Police said the man, a "herd boy" thought to be 25, led her the wrong way before raping her. The Londoner spent a terrified night on the hillside before getting back to her car.
She was treated at a clinic in Howick. Police are investigating.
Parks authority KZN Wildlife spokesman Jeff Gaisford said three two-man teams of park rangers were sent out to look for her on Thursday.
It later emerged one team had passed so close to where she had bedded down for the night she could hear them talking.
