SPAIN

Costa hol home has everything you need

THE BOYS SAY:

THREE years ago, almost to the week, we spent an entire month in Spain filming Trading Up In The Sun, one of our BBC property shows. Based in Malaga, we passed most of our time in the mountainside village of Competa a beautiful range with direct aspects to the sea. Hells bells, it was gorgeous think lush green hillsides and clear mountain air. Think old men with sun-tortured faces and old ladies all in black. Back then, nearby Competa was just beginning to happen. Because of its remote-ish location values were only finding their feet but the area was becoming slowly popular, especially with those who wanted to get away from the ever madding holiday crowd. The villa we transformed was similar to this one and it takes us right back. Our wee fellow had its own pool and two bedrooms as well as almost half an acre of olive groves and naranja (orange) trees and, at just pounds 45,000, we regret to this day that we didnt make an offer. Ah well, theres no point crying over spilt holiday home leche.

But anyway, back to the present day and this weeks Property Of The Week. While admittedly much larger, this new-build house is another joy to behold. And its quarter of a million pounds price tag reminds us just how much values have risen and the opportunity we missed. Sure, its a bit of a trek along winding (and often steep) roads to get there but its SO worth the effort.

Without nearly as much development as neighbouring Malaga theres a peaceful way of life more reminiscent of traditional Spain. Local amenities are limited and youll need to make the Malaga pilgrimage to do your weekly shopping but if peace and quiet are your thing then youll be on to a winner with this finca.

So what are the plus points? Well, four bedrooms and a well- equipped kitchen and bathroom make this a sound rental prospect and the fact it has its own swimming pool could increase weekly rental income by as much as pounds 150.

Also, bear in mind that because Malaga flights are regular and affordable, demand for homes such as this will always be strong. Sure there are cheaper fixer upper options on the market but with them comes the need to find tradespeople and local suppliers to assist with renovations and installation of services. The good news is that this home is ready to move into and its sold fully- furnished so youll have everything you need (down to the TV and DVD) to get you going. We can almost feel ourselves slapping on the factor 20 beside that pool. Pass the sangria!
