HUMANISTS HITCHED
ANDREW BLACKA COUPLE were wed yesterday in the UK's first legal humanist marriage.
Karen Watts, 29, and Martin Reijns, 27, tied the knot in a landmark ceremony in Edinburgh.
Until now the non-religious wedding has required a second, civil ceremony to make it legal. But new laws passed in Scotland earlier this year mean humanist ceremonies can take place without a minister or registrar.
The traditionally-dressed couple, who posed briefly for photographers following the wedding at The Royal Zoological Gardens, have been together for six years.
Ms Watts and Mr Reijns, who are both non-religious, thought a civil ceremony would be too impersonal.
Ivan Middleton of the Humanist Society married the couple. He said: "It was a wonderful day. The couple wrote the ceremony themselves and it was a real celebration of their love."
