When the guard combination of Tisharria Huggins and Ariana Scales is working, Topeka West becomes unbeatable.

Such was the case Thursday night as Topeka West dominated Topeka High, 57-42, at Topeka West giving them an 8-1 league record and outright ownership of the I-70 league title.

"The kids came out and worked hard tonight," said Charger coach Mike Goehring. "We had to prove something after the setback we had Tuesday."

"We weren't as smooth and fluid as we needed to be, but we made some defensive stops and got some layups off our pressure and this is our game," Goehring added.

Indeed it was their game as a steal and layup by Huggins early in the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game. Again midway through the second quarter, the pressure defense by West created two back-to-back steals by Scales which widened the point spread to 10 and put the game out of the Trojans' reach.

"It was definitely the defensive pressure that created a lot of our opportunities," said Huggins. "When one person stops another it creates an opportunity for a teammate to scramble for the steal and that's where we got a lot of our points. That's our game."

Both Huggins and Scales led the Chargers in scoring with 17 points. Michelle Mohlander contributed 8 points and Lacie Manns had 6.

Chrystal Kemp led the Trojans with 18, followed by Anjanae Wilson with 8.

"If we could have kept from turning the ball over and allowing them fast breaks, it would have been an even ballgame," said Trojan coach Brenda Soldani.

Topeka West will take on Emporia at Topeka West on Monday, Feb. 21. Topeka High's next contest will be at home with Junction City on Feb. 24.
