Backup plans - Travelers' Intercom

As one of the travelers who travel with carry-ons only, I'd like to respond to a couple of questions ITN readers have posed recently about this topic.

Regarding the weight limit for carry-ons, I have never been questioned about the weight of my suitcase (which is usually about 20 pounds) but only about its size, and so far it has always been considered small, enough.

I always carry in my purse a little fold-up backpack (a wonderful item which I bought several years ago from L.L. Bean). if I were to learn that I couldn't carry my suitcase oh, I would move away from the counter and put the essentials from my suitcase into that backpack. It would then be my carry-on and I would check my suitcase.

In response to the "Pointed query" about what carry-on-only travelers do about the nail scissors, etc., that can't be taken in carry-on bags (April '03, pg. 42), if I'm traveling with friends who plan to check luggage, they're usually willing to carry my pointed items. However, if I'm by myself, I simply plan to buy a pair of nail scissors in the country I'm visiting and consider it p of the expense of post-9/11 travel.

I admit that I don't know what I'd do if I were traveling to a location so remote that nail scissors might hot be available.
