Marcus Culvert - wheelchair user competes in drag racint - Brief Article
Carol MillerAt the age of 31, Marcus Culvert was working as a musical director in Japan where he was making great money, living in a comfortable home and owning both cars and motorcycles. Marcus said he was living the fast life, but it would soon change forever. One morning he left home on his way to work on his motorcycle. He was hit by a truck that ran a stop sign and was air lifted to Seattle during which his lung collapsed and he was induced into a coma to save his life. He remained in the coma 15 days and in the hospital for three months. When he was released, he moved back to New Jersey where his mother and daughter reside.
Today, Marcus lives independently and manages his daily chores such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping without assistance. Several times a week he is drag racing. He has a special setup on his car that allows him to control everything by hand. Most of his competitors don't even know he uses a wheelchair. Currently he is striving for the pros and is seeking sponsorship by major companies. He remains active with his music and plans on returning to his parish to perform, and possibly go back into the New York clubs.
Several years ago he received a Certificate of Commendation for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year from the mayor and chief of police for transporting people in his truck during a blizzard that kept ambulances from getting patients to the hospital.
