3 out of 4 to vote for Cameron

THREE out of four Tory party members are planning to vote for David Cameron in the leadership election, according to a new poll yesterday.

An ICM survey for the BBC's Politics Show gave him 76 per cent of the vote with David Davis on 24 per cent.

The campaign still has five weeks to run but many members are expected to vote when they receive ballot papers next week.

In a desperate bid to boost his support, Mr Davis yesterday pledged to create 20 new grammar schools if he becomes PM.

Taking a swipe at Eton-educated Mr Cameron, he said: "Poor children need the best academic education - the sort better-off parents have the power to demand."This will revolutionise education in our inner cities."

Mr Davis's speech in Altrincham again underlined his determination to talk policy in contrast to what Mr Cameron's critics claim is his focus on lightweight spin.
