Threat to benefits as GPs revolt

PETER CLARK

THE Government is facing a revolt by doctors who are refusing to do medicals for state benefit claimants.

Three thousand GPs carry out examinations, and earn pounds 30- pounds 50 a time.

But 750 doctors have withdrawn their labour until they get more pay.

And the British Medical Association predicts that 1,000 doctors will be in revolt in three months.

Because of the hold-up, thousands of people will have to wait months for their benefit.

About 70,000 medicals are carried out each month on people claiming state benefits for the first time, such as disability living allowance, invalidity or incapacity allowance.

Health Secretary Alan Milburn will face the complaint that doctors have not had a pay rise in seven years.

"The system will descend into chaos," said Dr Peter Holden, a BMA director.

"The money on offer is appalling. I have refused to offer my services any longer."

GP Dr Stephen Rothery said the work can involve driving to and from the claimant's home, asking questions to fill in both sides of a 10-page form and drawing up a report.

Dr Rothery, from Rochdale, Lancs, said: "It's about time we stood together. We should work to rule and stand firm."

The Benefit Agency's contractors, Sema, said it regretted criticism but that the matter was being reviewed.

The BMA's Dr Holden will be having talks on the issue with Social Security Minister Hugh Bailey later this month.
