AIRPORT THREAT TO SEIZE MOBILES

EXCLUSIVE by MATTHEW BELL

AIRLINE passengers are set to have mobile phones confiscated in a major new safety crackdown.

Alarming new research by a team of aviation experts show they can cause compasses to freeze, navigation systems to give false readings and even to stop pilots talking to control towers.

The Civil Aviation Authority has already advised airline staff to tell passengers to switch off their mobiles before boarding and to check hand luggage if they are not convinced.

But the most drastic step being considered is taking passengers' phones until landing.

Airlines are likely to resist such a move as it could lead to delays and rows with passengers refusing to hand them over.

But pilots have welcomed the CAA's tougher line. "More needs to be done to educate the public," said a spokesman.

"Passengers are asked to turn off their phones, but few appreciate the safety implications as to why they are being asked to do this."
