EVERTON'S build-up for their Champions League debut hit a brick wall with this demoralising defeat.

But manager David Moyes said: "We came here for a reason and it showed us exactly what we have to do if we want any form of success in Europe.

"We're disappointed in the result but we knew we were up against a very good side. They've been the champions of Turkey for the last two years."

Everton now host fellow Champions League hopefuls Udinese at Goodison in midweek before the real test against Spanish side Villarreal a week later.

Moyes may want to go back to the drawing board after this harsh lesson at the Ataturk Stadium - the scene of Liverpool's Champions League win in May.

With the exception of goalkeeper Richard Wright, Everton started with the players who are likely to carry the club's torch in their first European campaign for ten years, and in the opening exchanges they matched their hosts.

But Everton conceded twice before the break - first on 24 minutes when Sanli Tuncay found the target with a low shot from the left- hand side, and then 10 minutes later when Marcio Nobre headed home at the far post from a free-kick.

Moyes made changes at the interval but the Turkish side went three up when substitute Mehmet Yozgati drove into the the roof of the net on 55 minutes.

Brazilian ace Alex scored the fourth from another set-piece on 62 minutes and Onder Turaci headed home a free kick in the last minute.
