Agutter backs better roads
AMANDA BROWNACTRESS Jenny Agutter is launching a campaign to improve urban roads at the House of Commons today. Transport 2000, of which Ms Agutter is the patron, wants to make city streets safe and healthy places to live and work.
Ms Agutter said: "Main roads don't have to be a nightmare. They could be valued places where people can enjoy the shops, meet neighbours and pass the time of day."
Over the next three years, Transport 2000 will work with local authorities on traffic and urban design issues in seven pilot schemes, including one in Southwark, to provide examples of best practice.
Measures might include allocating more space to pedestrians and cyclists, calming traffic, improving crossings, planting trees and removing street clutter.
