Scoring machine

Kritchevsky, Janice

Kansas State's Laurie Koehn began her collegiate career with a bang. As a freshman, she ranked first in the nation in 3-pointers made, finishing the 2001-02 season with 122 treys. Besides establishing a new school record, Koehn became the NCAA's second-most-prolific 3-point shooter for a single season.

As the Wildcat markswoman put it, "We put K-State on the map that year. I was very fortunate to be part of that team. It was really unbelievable - tons of fun and a great experience."

Koehn maintained her strong play as a sophomore, averaging 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 3.0 3-pointers per game. The 21-year-old is a particularly potent offensive threat because of her high shooting percentage. Koehn has averaged 44 percent from the field, including 42 percent from 3-point range, during her career.

As the Hesston, Kansas, native began her junior season, she expressed a desire to contribute more than points. "My biggest strength is my shooting ability," she noted. "I've always been able to score. Now I want to help us a little more in other ways. I need to get better at moving without the ball, and I need to work on my footwork."

For the second consecutive summer, Koehn was named to a USA Basketball team. In 2002, she was a member of the gold-medal-winning squad in the inaugural Confederation of Pan American Basketball Associations (COPABA) World Championship for Young Women Qualifying Tournament. In 2003, she played for Team USA in the Pan Am Games.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to participate," said the 5'8'' guard before heading to the Dominican Republic. "Not many college players have the chance to participate and learn from the play and then compete for your country. It's an enormous honor."

Kendra Wecker and Nicole Ohlde, who also played with USA Basketball this summer, return for the Wildcats.

"All of us are back and we're upperclassmen now," said Koehn. "We can build on what we have. I'm excited about next year."
