Arrows travel great distances

Johnson, Norman E

Have you ever wondered how far an arrow may travel, or thought about the launch angle required to attain maximum distance? It may be farther than you think. For example, the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization has set certain standards for comparing and testing compound bows. These standards are: 60-pound bow draw weight, 30-inch bow draw length and 540-- grain total arrow weight.

With these specifications, a bow is powerful enough to send a broadhead-equipped arrow a distance of more than 300 yards when launched at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. Heavier bows will push an arrow to still greater distances.

It is interesting to note these arrows achieve sufficient terminal velocity to easily kill a deer or penetrate more than 6 inches into the earth. -Norman E. Johnson
