Madison, Wis. Greendale basketball coach Paul Krajewski and his assistants were on the bench screaming and frantically waving their arms for the Panthers to call a timeout as they trailed by two points in the waning seconds Friday afternoon.
Steve Malkowski then buried a three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left, giving Greendale a thrilling 46-45 victory over River Falls in the Division 2 semifinals of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament at the Fieldhouse.
The Panthers (18-5), who were making their first-ever trip to the state tournament, won despite making only 4 of 23 three- point attempts (17%).
"These kids have battled back from adversity all season long," said Krajewski, whose team was to face Kimberly (25-1) in the championship Saturday. "As far as being down and needing a key steal or a key basket, they've come through."
Kimberly 56, Fort Atkinson 32 The 12 seniors on the Kimberly team want to go out in high style this weekend.
Thanks to their manhandling of Fort Atkinson, the Papermakers will get that chance.
Kimberly scored the last 10 points in the second quarter to take a 27-13 halftime lead and were never challenged after that.
Jason Diaz, one of Kimberly's five senior starters, led all scorers with 18 points. Byron Bye paced Fort Atkinson (15-11) with 11 points.
