Lots of `alternatives' pile up for the weeks ahead
TINA MAPLESA LITTLE bit of "Here and Now" will be here in the near future. The Boston alterna-pop quintet Letters to Cleo rattles off its rapid-fire hit from the "Melrose Place" soundtrack, plus other tunes from its debut disc, "Aurora Gory Alice," on March 25, a Saturday, at the Unicorn, 300 W. Juneau Ave. Chicago alternative rockers Catherine share the bill. Admission to the 9:30 p.m. show is $7.
Another Chicago outfit, the Anglophile power-pop trio Material Issue, will perform May 5, a Friday, at the Rave, 2401 W. Wisconsin Ave. Vainglorious opens at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Break out the crazy condiments. Horn-fed ska band Skankin' Pickle tops a bill with Mustard Plug plus the Parka Kings and the Invaders at 7 p.m. March 26, a Sunday, at the Rave. Admission is $9.
Here's your chance to support Wisconsin music. Several benefit concerts for the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) are scheduled in coming weeks at various local clubs. Each show costs $5.
The alternative-music bands 2 Ton Heavy Thing, Generic Freedom, Blarney Castle and Dead Fly Boy perform at 10 p.m. Saturday 3/11 at the Globe, 2028 E. North Ave.
A second alternative-music benefit at the Globe at 10 p.m. next Thursday features Honey Child, Rust Belt, Squares and Pinwheel.
Midian, Shut Up and Drive, One Man's Trash and Wanda Chrome & the Leather Pharoahs play a third WAMI alterna-event at the Globe at 10 p.m. March 24, a Friday.
The cover bands Kid Gloves (classic rock), the Davis Family (Top 40/dance), Extreme Angel (classic rock) and the Blue Deuces (blues-rock) queue up for a WAMI benefit at 6:30 p.m. Sunday 3/12 at Nick's Nicabob, 3419 W. Forest Home Ave.
Also Sunday, 3/12 a WAMI rap/hip-hop showcase at the Rave will feature rappers Mind Pimp, La Flow and Strick as well as the hip-hop groups Gumbo, Strange Child and Rhetoric. The show starts at 7 p.m.
The Business, a British Oi! band, will headline a bill with the Service of Milwaukee and another local act at 9 p.m. Tuesday March 14 at the Globe. Admission is $10 at the door.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday 3/13 for a King Crimson reunion show June 15 at the Riverside Theatre, 116 W. Wisconsin Ave. Reserved seats are $35, $30 and $25.
