Planner hired for Moorland

Waukesha Design work on the long-proposed extension of Moorland Road, from I-43 in New Berlin to Highway L in Muskego, is about to get under way.

The County Board on Tuesday authorized the hiring of R.A. Smith & Associates Inc. to design the extension for $149,000.

Transportation Director Richard A. Bolte said he hoped construction would be completed by the end of 1997. Plans call for a 2.3-mile connection at a projected cost of $4 million.

Waukesha County, Muskego and New Berlin will share the cost equally. The county's share will be from taxpayers. New Berlin's will come from revenue generated by a special taxing district involving the Westridge commercial development. Muskego's share will be from state and federal highway money. In two other matters Tuesday, the County Board voted unanimously to use surplus money to pay off debt early. The board agreed to:

Pay off $3 million of a long-term bond issued in 1990, which carries an interest rate of 6.3% to 6.35%. The money will cover payments due in 1996, 1997 and 1998 and will save the county $456,075 in interest.

Use $402,880 in surplus from the county's recycling plant to repay New England CRINC, the private firm under contract to run the operation, for equipment installed in the plant.
