Corn import forecasts up sharply - forecasts for Central and Southern Africa region; statistical data for marketing years 1981/82 through 1991/92 - U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service Report - Illustration

Serious drought conditions in much of the southern Africa region are expected to result in a dramatic shift in corn trade throughout the southern and central African region over at least the next 12 months. Countries in the region which had traditionally met regional import demand will themselves become importers.

The region as a whole had generally maintained a net export position since the mid-1980's. However, regional imprts during the last half of the 1991/92 October/September marketing year, projected at about 4 million metric tons, will outstrip regional and external export commitments made prior to the onset of October/September year and will be met by the United States and other corn suppliers outside the region. South Africa, traditionally a significant exporter to world markets, is forecast to import 4.5 million tons of corn during its May/April marketing year.
