Nortel Networks to Add New Radio Base Station, Software to Wireless Internet Portfolio
Nortel Networks has announced a new compact Internet-based transceiver station and radio resource management software as part of its e-mobility Wireless Internet access portfolio, enhancing its leadership position in the emerging market for UMTS infrastructure equipment in Europe.
Announced at UMTS 2000 in Barcelona, the Nortel Networks e-mobility Compact Internet BTS is designed to address urban and suburban coverage requirements for UMTS operators with limited real estate for cell site deployment. The e-mobility Compact BTS, scheduled for commercial availability beginning in mid-2001, will be able to be plugged into existing transmission racks, providing additional capacity with no increase in floor space.
Also announced, Nortel Networks e-mobility Radio Resource Management software will complement the Nortel Networks e-mobility Internet BTS and core IP network by maximizing spectrum efficiency to deliver the highest capacity available in the industry. In addition to high capacity, e-mobility Radio Resource Management will improve reliability by reducing dropped calls, which can increase operator revenues and improve subscriber loyalty.
Nortel Networks e-mobility Radio Resource Management will support GSM, CDMA, and UMTS standards. A self-tuning solution, it will dynamically manage quality of service according to network load, maximizing subscriber capacity while reducing operational expenses.
To meet anticipated demand for these solutions, part of a US$70 billion wireless infrastructure market industry analysts expect in Europe alone by 2003, Nortel Networks has dedicated its systems house in Chateaudun, France to ramp-up and volume production of 3G UMTS base stations, including the e-mobility Internet BTS portfolio. The Nortel Networks systems house in Calgary, Alberta will.also support this effort.
